Having been in the job for more than 25 years, success and self-motivation are essential. When leading a headhunting team it’s vital to understand all perspectives, including clients and candidates, as well as our internal headhunting and research teams. Social skills and fast character assessments are all crucial skills as well.
It is vital to have an understanding of how companies operate in the wider economy. So, a business degree is a bare minimum. Then a few years’ experience working in corporate environments and perhaps a stint in management consultancy would provide a valuable foundation for a headhunter to begin their career.
Let’s not underestimate the communication skills – mainly listening, advisory and quick assessment of situations. When it comes to working with candidates then fast relationship building and empathy are crucial to creating trust with individuals.

Headhunting is a diverse activity requiring many diverse skills. All assignments are very different. I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity of interacting with amazing professionals from all around the world.
In the morning I could be working with the research team, identifying Sales VP’s for a project based in Germany. Then in the afternoon I might be headhunting for a CEO for a Dubai business. In the evening I could be taking calls from clients and candidates who were unavailable during working hours. So, as you can see there are many requirements and responsibilities with respect, availability and commitment being paramount.
For a Headhunter like me there’s never enough hours in a day. Working with clients all over the world in different time zones is challenging but rewarding. At MSC Headhunters our projects are all guaranteed, so we must deliver in a very fast time frame with the highest level of quality work. So that means sometimes being available to work long hours and weekends to get the job done, working under pressure is a factor and I take pleasure in it.
